Her coverage continues: Female weightlifter wins fight over Muslim attire (video)
It’s a victory for female Muslim weightlifters everywhere! Um, wait … she may be the only one. Anyway, here’s Kulsoom Abdullah, who refused to take off her traditional Muslim garb in order to compete in USA Weightlifting Federation tournaments. Barred from competing because she wouldn’t wear a singlet, which is against her religion, she took her appeal to the International Weightlifting Federation. And today, she won. The IWF is amending its rules to allow her to compete.
From MSNBC:
Abdullah’s wardrobe hasn’t slowed her down. While she was in graduate school at Georgia Tech, getting a PhD in computer networking, she reached the black belt level in taekwondo, the Korean martial art. She started lifting weights about four years ago as part of her overall training regimen. It turned into a passion.
I say all of our wrestlers should start wearing hijabs.
